After replacing the broken balancer unit, the engine ran without any strange noises, but there was a bad oil leak from the front of the timing case. At first I thouhgt it was a bad seal with the gastket on the sump, so I dropped the sump again, checked the gasket and applied a fresh film of oil.

After putting sump back up the oil leak was worse and was visibly spitting from the engine! On closer inspection there was a hole in the timming case cover. You can see a gear from the balancer unit through the hole.

This fell out when I removed the sump, it looks like some sort of chemical metal type filler. It would seem that I opened an old wound and the previous owner had similar issue with the tractor but made a bodged repair, altough it has lasted over 20 years.
